There is a common misconception that in order to travel on a luxury type of vacation one must scrimp and sacrifice for months in order to save up enough to enjoy the trip. The Travel Industry Association of America estimates that the average extended vacation costs more than $2000 per year. Many people believe this amount is out of reach without considerable sacrifices.
However, with careful, advance planning and research one can take a vacation of this type on a budget and possibly save as much as 10% of the average amount spent. Over time, this savings could add up to a considerable amount.
Another misconception is that paying more gets you more. There are many people on vacation at luxury resorts or tourist areas that have been able to arrange for the vacation on a budget. Some may pay more and some may pay less than average but planning is the key to a budget holiday.
When planning for a budget holiday timing is important. One should consider the low and peak booking times for a vacation destination. The more popular the time, the more the vacation is going to cost.
Also, consider the mode of transportation. Is driving to the destination cheaper than flying even if it takes longer? Another factor to consider is if you purchase a travel agent’s package or you create your own by booking airline tickets, the hotel room and activities and entertainment at your destination.
There are a number of considerations to keep in mind when planning to book a vacation for the most money savings. To begin with, one should be willing to be flexible in terms of dates and location. This can prove to be beneficial in waiting until the last minute to book. A filled room is better than an empty one and most often hotel operators are willing to negotiate a price to get the room occupied.
However, do not count on last minute deals completely. There is no guarantee that all the components will come together at the last minute, as you might want. You would not want to have a hotel reserved and entertainment booked but no way to get there because you cannot get flight tickets.
As a rule, if one is attempting to book for a specific holiday such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, or a special cruise that is only offered by a limited number of operators, you may find that last minute deals are not available.
