Another year has passed with an amalgamation of gaiety and woe as it would be in anyone’s life. The entire year witnessed a mix of quirks of fate laughing at people’s face and equally jubilant events on the other side that forms the usual life cycle. As the calendar trimmed it size due to the advent of December, the final fortnight spread glee with the festive mood touching its Zenith at Christmas. The flavor strengthened as the year 2007 was about to bid adieu, although 2008 was on its toes to take charge.

Animals too celebrated Christmas jumping and hopping their way in Sydney Zoological Park. Monkeys savored chilled ice creams, while Giraffes ate Apples kept at their height amid trees. Strawberries were also a part of their Christmas food this time. The caretakers conducted eating competitions for wild animals, where the former tested the eating and finding capacity of the carnivores.

The Thais of Thailand conducted an annual ritual to please scores of Monkeys by offering them a sumptuous meal with hundreds of eye-catching fruits. Jaunty monkeys jumped around the fruits and made merry. This is a reminder that Thailand is not only the land of elephants, but also a land, where monkeys are revered.

Elsewhere in Taipei, a couple had their wedding that had a marked difference from other marriages. At a time, when marriages take place in extravaganza, the couple wore wedding robes made out of ‘toilet papers’. It was a different costume to witness but with no oddity in terms of appearance. Spun in pure white toilet paper, their dress was the cynosure of all eyes at the wedding venue.

Imagine a floating Christmas tree bedecked with 3 million lamps (Oops!) illuminating a vast area; a 810 Square meter base with a length of 279 feet and as high as 37 feet was left to float in the waters of Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The tree symbolized the reign of light over darkness and the will of people to create such a magnificent piece of Christmas tree.

A swimming competition in Geneva, Switzerland that started in 1934 with nine participants has seen 800 participants this December. What is so special in this competition? Well, the lake in which they swam was terribly chill as is usual in December. However, the spirit of sportsmanship is worth admiring since the participants were spread over an age group between 15 years and 65 years and that is the inspiring message.

Spectators in Kolkota, India had a show of their pets ramping in the stage. In the international dog show held in Kolkata, 850 dogs including different breeds such as Doberman, Pomeranian walked with élan. Champions were selected and Prizes were given to the winners. The canines proved they not only could sniff, but also walk around the stage and win kudos for their masters.

A ship partially using wind as driving force and fitted with a parachute mounted on the top of the ship has started doing rounds in the trial stage. It is expected to sail in the Atlantic in early 2008. The crew from England is aiming to create a record in this voyage. The special feature is that the eco-friendly ship sans conventional fuel would help spread the message of environment protection; especially the welfare of the sea species such as whales, fish and other aquatic creatures would be safeguarded.

Japanese have achieved a milestone by genetically modifying rats wherein they have removed a gene in the rats’ brain, which is supposed to be the cause of fear in rats. Cats and rats were shown co-existing in peace. May be, this would provide more clues to treatment of phobias in humans.

These interesting events took place in the fortnight bygone. Many such global events would be posted in this topic in the future.
